Major Highlights of the Rio Carnival 2026
Iconic Samba Parades
Like every year, the Rio Carnival’s 2026 major highlight is going to be the most famous Samba Parades, which are the heart of the Carnival.
The world-famous Samba Schools compete with each other and feature glorious themed floats, thousands of dancers, live samba orchestras and uniquely choreographed performances.
The Samba Parades continue for several days. The parade includes the children’s samba parade, the Série Ouro competitive parades and the Champions Parade that takes place at the end.
Street Blocos
At the Rio Carnival, the Street Blocos are the open street parties celebrated across Rio’s neighbourhoods, including Copacabana, Ipanema, Santa Teresa and Urca.
A small live band leads the crowd with samba music, as percussionists, musicians, and drummers walk together. There are no tickets to join the Street Blocos, and anyone can join. People often sing along, dance, and follow the live bands.
Carnival Balls
Carnival Balls at the Rio Carnival 2026 are going to be a thrilling and fun experience for visitors. These flashy Carnival Balls are more formal and themed nights hosted in luxury venues, unlike the Street Blocos and Samba Parades.
The Copa Ball at the Copacabana Palace is one of the major attractions of the 2026 Rio Carnival. It will take place on 14 February 2026, with live music, dance and colourful costumes.

- I always hear people talk about the Special Group parades, but I didn't realize the Access Group and Champions Parade were such important parts of Carnival too. For anyone planning to attend the next Carnival, would it be a mistake to focus only on the Special Group and miss the other parade days?
